The capital city of Ukraine, Kyiv, has faced new attacks from Russian drones, and officials have also issued warnings about potential missile strikes from Moscow. Kyiv's Mayor, Vitaliy Klitschko, reported hearing explosions in the city on Tuesday morning and stated that a fire in the Desnianskyi district was caused by wreckage from the drones. Other cities, including Kherson and Mykolaiv, also experienced air alerts. Both sides have engaged in significant aerial assaults over the past few days. Klitschko mentioned that the fire in Desnianskyi district was caused by drone wreckage and that emergency services were at the scene. Mykolaiv's mayor confirmed that drones had been brought down in his city, leading to debris causing yet another fire. Ukraine's air force declared on Telegram that it had successfully downed all 35 Russian unmanned aerial vehicles that were launched on Monday night. However, after these attacks, multiple missiles were reportedly fired from Russia towards various areas, including Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Kirovohrad. Residents were advised to listen for air raid sirens and seek shelter. These events followed a series of attacks by both sides, initiated by Ukraine striking the Russian border city of Belgorod on Saturday, resulting in at least 25 deaths and over 100 injuries. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that his forces would escalate strikes on military targets in Ukraine. Putin also claimed that Western rhetoric towards the war had started to change as they realized they could not "destroy" Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky refuted these claims during an interview with The Economist, dismissing Putin's suggestion that Russia was winning the war as nothing more than a "feeling." Zelensky emphasized the number of Russian casualties in Ukraine and pointed out that the opposing forces had failed to capture any major cities in 2023. Zelensky also expressed his frustration with Western allies, criticizing them for losing a sense of urgency.
