Egypt and Mexico, two countries separated by distance and with distinct differences in language, cuisine, politics, and culture, found themselves united in a shared sense of confusion caused by US President Joe Biden. During a news conference aimed at defending his cognitive abilities, Biden mistakenly referred to Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi as the "president of Mexico." This slip-up quickly caused a stir on social media in both countries. Mexican netizens responded to the gaffe with a lighthearted approach, sharing images of the Mexican flag featuring the Egyptian eagle of Saladin from the country's coat of arms. Similarly, Egyptians shared images of a Mexican eagle on an Egyptian flag, humorously captioning it as the "Arab Republic of Mexico." Some users marveled at the visual mash-up, finding it intriguing. Others went a step further, creating AI-generated images of Mayan temples alongside the pyramids or President Al-Sisi sporting traditional Mexican attire and playing a guitar. Interestingly, Egyptians have long referred to Al-Sisi as "El Miksiki" (the Mexican) to evade government censorship. This nickname originated from a meme that was popular in Egypt, and now some Egyptians jokingly refer to their country as being under "Mexican occupation" when expressing criticism against the regime. However, not all Egyptians found the Biden gaffe amusing. Many expressed disbelief and anger, using the moment as an opportunity to criticize the president for US support of Israel during the Gaza war. Despite the differences between Egypt and Mexico, this incident unintentionally brought the two nations together in a shared moment of confusion and levity.
