Winter storms have battered parts of the eastern US, leading Florida to declare a state of emergency in numerous counties. Over 40 million people are facing severe storm threats from New Mexico to Maine. In Florida, more than 85,000 individuals are without power due to strong winds that have caused damage to homes and power lines. The storms are expected to cause further destruction as they continue into the evening. Tornadoes have already been reported in Florida, Alabama, and Georgia, resulting in significant damage and search and rescue operations. Tragically, one person was killed in Georgia when a tree fell on their car. Schools in Florida and other affected states have closed or shifted to online learning. New Jersey has also declared a state of emergency, with a coastal flood advisory in effect until Wednesday. New York State Governor, Kathy Hochul, warned that the storm could be "life threatening" due to expected rainfall combining with existing snow, leading to potential flash floods. New York City has deployed first responders and utility crews and has relocated migrants for safety reasons. The severe weather has also disrupted travel in Kansas. The National Weather Service (NWS) anticipates a slight easing of the extreme weather by Wednesday, although some areas might still experience snow showers.
