More than 75,000 union workers at Kaiser Permanente, a healthcare provider, have started the largest walkout by health workers in US history. The strike, which will last for three days, includes nurses, pharmacists, and lab technicians in five states and Washington DC. The stalled contract negotiations between the unions and Kaiser Permanente have led to this work stoppage. It is estimated that nearly 13 million patients could be affected by the strike. However, hospitals and emergency facilities will remain open during this time. The Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions hopes that the strike will pressure the company to address staffing shortages and improve wages. Kaiser Permanente has stated that it has made progress in discussions with the unions and remains committed to reaching a new agreement. The strike will have the most significant impact in California, Oregon, Colorado, and Washington state. While hospitals and emergency departments will still function with contingent workers, non-essential services may need to be rescheduled. In Virginia and Washington DC, approximately 400 pharmacists and optometrists planned to stop work for a day. The unions have highlighted Kaiser Permanente's profits and executive salaries as reasons to renegotiate contracts. The strike is one of several high-profile labor actions taking place in the US this year.
