Alexei Navalny, the imprisoned Russian opposition leader, has been transferred from the penal colony where he was serving his sentence, and his current location is unknown, according to his spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh. Yarmysh shared on social media that officials at the Melekhovo colony indicated that Navalny was no longer registered there. His associates anticipated his transfer to a more restrictive prison facility after his sentence was extended. They suspect that his disappearance is connected to recent political developments related to upcoming elections. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently announced his intention to seek re-election in March. Navalny was previously found guilty of founding and funding an extremist organization, charges he denies, and was given an additional 19-year sentence. He was already serving nine years for parole violations, fraud, and contempt of court. These charges against him are widely believed to have political motivations. Authorities informed him that he would be relocated to a "special regime colony," typically reserved for dangerous criminals, repeat offenders, and those serving life sentences. Navalny's associates reported on Monday that they had not received any news from him for six days. He had missed several court appearances recently, which he had previously attended via video link. Prison authorities attributed these absences to technical issues at the colony. Yarmysh later revealed that lawyers waiting for news outside the Melekhovo colony and another nearby facility were informed that Navalny was not registered at either location. His aide, Leonid Volkov, strongly believes that this is not a coincidence but rather a deliberate political move orchestrated by the Kremlin. Volkov claimed that Putin, fully aware of who his main opponent is in the upcoming elections, wants to silence Navalny and prevent his voice from being heard. He urged others to become the voice of Navalny. Navalny has spent over a decade exposing corruption within the Russian power structure. His investigative videos have garnered millions of views online. As a charismatic figure, Navalny has been able to mobilize large numbers of people across Russia to participate in anti-government protests. In 2020, he was poisoned in Siberia with a nerve agent, a fact later confirmed by Western laboratories. A subsequent investigation by Bellingcat and The Insider implicated several agents of Russia's FSB security service in the attack. Despite warnings of potential arrest, Navalny returned to Russia in 2021 after recovering from the poisoning. However, he was promptly detained upon arrival at a Moscow airport.
